The Audioscape Project

This site hosts various information and documentation about the Audioscape Project, whose home base is the Shared Reality Lab at McGill University. Other members of the collective include La Société des arts technologiques, the Université de Montréal and the Banff Centre for the Arts. The work is funded by NSERC and Canada Council for the Arts, through their New Media Initiative.

[4,5 March 2010] "Audio Graffiti" Installation at the 12 Biennial Symposium on Arts and Technology, New London, CT. A location-based audio-tagging and remixing environment will be demonstrated at Connecticut College on March 4th and 5th. Set in an indoor "audio augmented'' environment, several mobile users may create and explore a gradually evolving wall of audio graffiti. Equipped with wireless headsets and an i-pod/i-touch controller, each participant can "tag" or "spray the wall with their audio, mixing in with pre-existing musical material. [21 Aug 2009] "Audio Graffiti" Installation at the International Computer Music Conference (ICMC). A location-based audio-tagging and remixing environment will be demonstrated at the ICMC in Montreal on Friday, August 21st at 15h30 - 17h30. Set in an outdoor "audio augmented'' environment, several mobile users may create and explore a gradually evolving wall of audio graffiti. Equipped with headsets and small mobile computers, each participant can "tag" or "spray the wall with their audio, mixing in with pre-existing musical material. [06 May 2008] Demo at Mobile Music Workshop
The current state of the Mobile Audioscape project will be presented at the Mobile Music Workshop in Vienna from May 13-15. Mike Wozniewski will be there to describe the progress and show a small demonstration.

[11 Mar 2008] Mobile Audioscape presented at Interface[s] Montreal
Mike Wozniewski presented work related to the Mobile Audioscape project at [[http://www.interfacesmontreal.org][Interface[s] Montreal]], a monthly conference series in Montreal that brings together researchers, entrepreneurs and artists from various technological disciplines. Mike presented at the 'Digital Mobility' conference, and the video is available here.

[25 Feb 2008] New video for Mobile Audioscape
The Mobile Audioscape project had a significant development period in Nov 2007, when a few members of our team participated in the Locative Media Residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. See the MobileAudioscape page for more details.

[16 Nov 2007] DVD created for Ménagerie Imaginaire
Ménagerie Imaginaire was performed both at NIME 2007 and Pd Convention 2007, but a good quality recording is not available. Hence, we have reconstructed the performance, and filmed a 10 minute version of the piece, with a 5.1 surround channel mix. See the MenagerieImaginaire page for more details.

[02 Nov 2007] Mobile Audioscape
A couple members of the Audioscape team depart for a month long residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts. Their focus is the creation of large-scale audio scenes, where multiple participants (tracked with GPS technology) can interact and explore a hidden sonic world. Visit the Almost Perfect webpage for more information about the residency. A project page on the twiki has also been created, called MobileAudioscape.

You are looking at the new website for the Audioscape project, in TWiki format. This will be the main site for documentation, but will also be a place for keeping track of various developments and projects related to Audioscape. There is a section for publications, videos, and much more to come.
